The Video Art production from whence this comes:
(noted 12/4/11 – It was briefly in Explore.)
Let me explain. You might have seen these guys before (the shepherds) and the sheep. They are part of the latest version of the magnet nativity sets I originally designed for Patrick (when he was 3 or so). There was nothing like this out in the stores, he loved playing with magnets on the fridge and it was a wonderful, fun way to bring home to him what Christmas was all about. I later sold sets through a Craft mall and online and gave them as gifts. That was then. This is now. I’m no longer in business, but I still make the sets occasionally when I want to help someone with small kids find the spiritual meaning of Christmas. They are now done totally digitally. My originals were made of craft foam, acrylic paint, movable eyes and Paperkins (cardboard figures used in scrapbooking) and put together with a hot glue gun with magnet stripping pieces on the back of each. I designed the outfits for Mary, Joseph, 3 shepherds, 3 Wise Men, 3 angels and still have the patterns for those. Patrick’s original set is an original. No one else has that set. What I do for gifts and what I sold were scans of the original, with all traces of the Paperkins bodies removed, and new faces and bodies digitally added. Over the years, I modified how I did them – from printing them on photo paper originally with magnets stuck on the back to running photo magnet paper through a printer. Each little figure is hand cut out by me, after it is top-laminated. I’m preserving some sets for my grandkids-to-be…I saw them the other day! (the sets, not the kids)
For the purposes of the Video Art production referenced I had to create someone for the shepherds
to "tell", so the people in the foreground are totally new and not part of the set.
In the last few years I’ve seen magnet cut out nativity sets in the stores, etc., so I no longer have a monopoly on the idea. Ah, well. It just means that more kids are finding out about the Good News. Jesus Christ came to earth, born of a Virgin (only God could do that) to be our Savior.
