Triplemint Meringues

Adapted from The 250 Best Cookie Recipes by Esther Brody. To add a bit of extra flavour (since meringues are notorious for tasting just sweet), I used a minty trifecta of dried peppermint, peppermint extract and mint chocolate chips – its a perfectly light addition to the cookie swap.

Mona’s Refrigerator Rolls
Homemade Gifts
My husband’s only sister was named Mona. For many years, she and her husband ran Bob’s Cafe in Grace, Idaho She was well known for NOT sharing her recipes–I never got the one for homemade sweet mustard. She said guys came into the cafe for that mustard, and if their wives could make it at home, she and Bob would lose business. There is even a story, possibly apocryphal, that she gave a recipe to an insistent person once–with an inportant ingredient left out.
She did give me this recipe, though, and I copied it into a steno notebook that has other recipes of that era–in the first two years of my marriage– either written in, or clipped and pasted. The handwriting is recognizably mine; my handwriting still looks very much like this. This page is the dirtiest in the notebook, and testifies to the many times I have made these rolls. It also demonstrates what 50 years will do to paper that is not acid-free. This notebook, and the Betty Crocker cookbook that was a wedding gift got us through our first few years of wedded life. Kraft’s Macaroni and Cheese Dinner was 11 cents at the PX in Lawton, Oklahoma. My husband was drafted into an artillery unit there right after we were married. I served this mac and cheese with frozen peas about once a week; ’twas a very thrifty meal. Said husband gently explained to me that he was tired of it, and would like just a bit more variety.
I got the notebook out today to copy the recipe for my niece, Ekaterina, who is getting married soon. My sister adopted Katya from a Russian orphanage when she was eleven. I can’t go to her kitchen shower, but I will send this, my best recipe. I will write clearer directions about punching down the dough in the morning and how to bake. I am at an age where daughter-in-laws cook Thanksgivng Dinner for me, but I still usually am asked to make these rolls.

A mix of ready-to-eat and unripe Concord grapes from our backyard vineyard made for a perfectly set, tangy jam that I canned to give away for Christmas gifts! I have another 5 lbs of grapes in the freezer for a second batch!

Adapted from Chocolate Moosey, this sweet, creamy fudge is loaded with all things vanilla – from infused sugar to extract, seeds from a vanilla bean and of course the vanilla-flavoured white chocolate! Homemade marshmallow creme makes this candy a breeze to make and ensures a melt-in-your-mouth experience!

Thanks Carla for the killer recipe!

Ladoo from Patel Brothers on Devon Avenue
Homemade Gifts
This is Ladoo, an Indian sweet, that is made out of chickpea flour and sort of tastes like a homemade donut hole that’s been dipped in a sweet syrup. This weekend I decided to go to Patel Brothers, an Indian Grocer on Devon Avenue, to get some bulk spices that I needed to make curry chicken crepes, and to give as gifts to foodie friends who are putting me up during my stay in NYC.
